How Fox News Responded to Beyoncé’s Super Bowl Show versus White Rioters Smashing Police Cars

In a dazzling display of ignorance and hypocrisy, Fox News once again shows us why they are the premier spin zone for the Republican party and its backwards politics.

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, a regular contributor and panelist on Fox News programs, recently appeared on their morning show Fox & Friends sounding like an out-of-touch parent while discussing Beyoncé’s Super Bowl performance. Speaking of the Coldplay-led performance as a whole, Giuliani’s get-off-my-lawn-isms included the phrase “[I] actually don’t even know why we have this. I mean, this is football.”

Then, however, he continued his rant by impugning Beyoncé, who was widely celebrated for using the halftime show to honor Black Lives Matter, the formation of the Black Panthers, and to show solidarity for those demanding justice for Mario Woods, who was shot dead by officers in December. Beyoncé performed her new single, “Formation,” the video for which evokes the Katrina disaster in black communities, and features graffiti which reads “stop shooting us,” among numerous other references to black culture and pride.

But of course, this is all about “attacking police,” according to the right. “This is football, not Hollywood, and I thought it was really outrageous that she used it as a platform to attack police officers who are the people who protect her and protect us, and keep us alive,” said Giuliani.

Michelle Malkin, conservative blogger and controversial personality figure, expressed her own faux outrage over Beyoncé’s performance on her Twitter account.

Meanwhile, far from the Santa Clara stadium where the main action occurred, white football fans took to the streets of Denver after the Broncos won the game to riot and destroy property, causing disturbances and forcing the police to use pepper spray and arrest several of the participants.

This is disappointing. While many people celebrated the Broncos’ Super Bowl victory peacefully, some were destructive. Denver Police made 12 arrests and thankfully, no one was seriously hurt.

But of course, you probably would have missed all this if Fox News is your primary source of information, because their headline on the event read “Bronco fans celebrate Super Bowl win in Denver streets.”

The article also refers to the unnecessary and pointless destruction as “impromptu partying,” making only passing reference to the destruction of property and drunken violence, downplaying the chaos of the event.

Anyone who remembers the infamous coverage of Katrina, where black people were called “looters” and white people were called “resourceful” citizens who “found” food will not be surprised by the blatant media double standard.
